Are Your Out Of Your Mind?
Greetings Summit Faith Family,
If you have ever been in a situation where your faith caused others to wonder if you were in your right mind, you will appreciate something that happened to Jesus after he began His ministry. The apostle Mark records that after beginning his ministry, Jesus frequently spent time teaching, preaching, and healing those who needed to be healed, both spiritually and physically. As a result of his ministry, it was natural for the contrast between Christ and the politically correct (the Pharisees and Sadducees) to become apparent to the general public.
This contrast was even evident to Jesus’ family. In chapter two of Mark, he records that at some point Jesus went to Capernaum and began to preach to the crowds that had gathered. There were so many people trying to hear him speak, it became difficult to even get close to Him. A paralytic had some friends who cared enough about him to attempt to get him to Jesus. Unable to get close enough to Jesus to get his attention, they decided to break through the roof of the house so they could lower the man down. As the man was lowered through the roof, Jesus saw the great faith of his friends and healed the man.
There were teachers of the law (Pharisees, etc.) who were observing this encounter. They began criticizing Jesus because he had forgiven the man of his sins. I am certain news of this event spread throughout the area. Mark continues his narrative by documenting the continued ministry of Jesus. Eventually news of His ministry reaches His family and Mark records a surprising occurrence: Then Jesus entered a house and again a crowd gathered, so that He and His disciples were not even able to eat. When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of Him, for they said: He is out of His mind……When Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call Him. A crowd was sitting around Him, and they told him: Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you (Mark 32:20-21, 31-32)
Can you imagine, the very Son of God, found Himself in a position where His family thought He was out of His mind! I recently read a perspective from one of our Christian authors who said: when we are in step with the Lord, we will be out of step with the world. There is a great deal of truth to that statement because the world has always been and will always be out of step with Jesus Christ. Unfortunately being out of step with the world usually generates criticism and allegations of being out of mind.
As we move into a post-post-modern world, we will all have to evaluate who we want to be in step with and understand that being in step with Christ will most assuredly result in those who will think we are out of our mind. But keep this in mind, the apostle Luke quoted the prophet Isaiah when he said this to those who would not accept Jesus Christ: You will be ever hearing, but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them. (Acts 28:26-27) Leaving one to wonder who is really out of their mind!
